Lucky 32 - Greensboro, NC
I can remember way back when - like 20 years ago - when Lucky 32 opened. I have to tell you, I didn't care for it then. My mom had a coupon sent to her (hint... sign up for their mailing list like I apparently did a gazillion years ago) and in todays more value-conscious times, I reluctantly agreed to go.
My how times have changed. This venue has gone from blah to lovely, with a focus on food more than the scene that I remembered when I lived in Greensboro.
The Quaintance-Weaver Restaurants all focus on seasonal features. I love how this freshens up a menu, but that you still have your favorites on call. Lucky 32 is no exception to this model. American food is the theme, and this summer was fresh-from-the-farm goodness. We started with a wonderful corn and crab chowder. Yes... chowder. They don't thicken with flour and the soup, not the cracker in the photo, is gluten-free.
Second, came another Southern delight with fried green tomatoes. These are dredged in cornmeal so again, safe. They had bacon and a pepper jam type of relish. Yum! We also shared a bibb lettuce salad with blobs of pimento cheese and pickled watermelon rind, dressed in a hot bacon dressing. This tasted good, but was a little over dressed. The last lettuce leaves were swimming, so order it on the side.
So I guess you can tell I really liked my experience. We ordered a bottle of wine, and had what we couldn't finish packed to go, along with the next evening's dessert choice. Our waitress was so sweet and informative - a doll! So if you had a bad impression of this restaurant, or are looking for good, honest, Southern food with a twist, stop by. I think you will like it.
