Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine - Chattanooga, TN

I love Thai food. I have been so fortunate to have the real deal in Thailand, as well as some great restaurants around the world. Amazingly enough, Greensboro / High Point, NC has great Thai food, so I use that as a benchmark for other mid-sized cities in the US. Sweet Basil is no Rearn Thai or Taste of Thai in NC, but it is the best Chattanooga has to offer when it comes to my satisfying my craving!

First off, the fact that this place is in a strip mall with no front windows is a little off-putting. Don't worry. Go in anyway. The service may be slow but the staff is super sweet. If you go at lunch, the bento box is a great deal. You never know what will be in it, and a lot of times there are dumplings so I have to pass. Still... it always looks promising.

My least favorite items have tofu. I adore tofu... I'm not soy hater. At Sweet Basil though, the tofu isn't fried as well as at other places, and it can be greasy. Also, their fried spring rolls have a filling very similar to egg rolls. I would suggest a pass.

My favorites include chicken larb. It is super spicy and served more like wraps with big leaves of cabbage. Yum. I am also a big fan of ginger chicken and the basil chicken. And their fresh rolls filled with shrimp rock! Also, they do have a decent wine list to compliment their food.

So the deal is that Sweet Basil has room for improvement. Still, it's a great local place and the best we have in Chattanooga for Thai, so go by and support them. Just be prepared to sit back, relax, and take your time to enjoy.
