Cru Cafe - Charleston, SC

Sometimes a concierge gets it right and sends me to exactly the kind of restaurant I'm looking for. Thus was the case when Sermet's Corner was recommended to me. I was going 2 for 2 when I asked for a lunch spot... good, quick, fresh, and open at 11. Some days they get it right, some days they don't.

Enter Cru Cafe. Let me say it isn't bad. I sent nothing back. I enjoyed my wine (Hughes Beaulieu Picpoul, Langedoc France 2007). I ate my food. It just wasn't remarkable - certainly not for a town with a culinary school, not for a town known for its food, and not for a line out the restaurant by 12. I could have the meal I had there anywhere, and in Charleston, I expect more.

Being lunch, I had an appetizer of mussels which were well prepared but needed a little sum-sum.

Then I had a salad, which was a touch over dressed with not very inspiring greens. Ok.. it was the butter green salad with added grilled shrimp, but it just seemed blah. It needed more candied pears and walnuts as opposed to big mound of butter greens.

The flourless chocolate cake was really really good. It redeemed the experience!

So I would give Cru Cafe a B- if I were the grading type of reviewer. Not bad, just not great. That being said, there are too many truly great options in Charleston for a mediocre meal, so unless you need an early lunch, pass this Pinckney St. cafe by.
