Saigon - Copenhagen, DK
I was cleaning out my wallet the other day when I came upon an old business card for Saigon Restaurant. I had the absolute pleasure of eating there while in Copenhagen in the summer of 2009. This was before the blog, and before I started taking photos of food, but it was so wonderful I wanted to share it with you here in case you happen to be heading to Europe this summer!
Having been in Denmark for 2 weeks, there was only so much herring and pate I wanted... the food in Denmark is lovely and high quality but expensive, and our hosts kept wanting us to try every authentic "local" restaurant in town. So my group of coworkers and I were on a mission for a Thai restaurant I had seen earlier while walking in the neighborhood near our hotel. As we approached, a man with a NY accent told us to keep walking, that there was a "Vietnamesisk" restaurant not much further. It took us a minute to find... it is located on the bottom floor at Solvgade 86 kld, 1307 Copenhagen (I realize the o should have a line through it... oops!). The bottom floor is actually a few steps down so we were peering into the cellar, kind of like in Savannah and Charleston. Our host didn't have any tables (always a good sign) so we had to loiter out front for 10 minutes or so.
I am so glad we didn't leave!!! We had a wonderful meal at Saigon, trying all sorts of things. I don't speak Dutch, or Vietnamese, so it was hard to ask about gluten-free issues. Fortunately, I didn't seem to be affected by anything in a negative way. I loved what I had so much I wrote it down for the local restaurant to try... Cha Ca Thang Long (again... I know the a's have different accents but when I do accents on this blog they sometimes mess up!)
Anyway, we all agreed it was our favorite meal of the journey, and oddly enough, our most affordable. If you find yourself overwhelmed by pickled herring in the beautiful city of Copenhagen, give Saigon a try.
