Undercurrent - Greensboro, NC

Back in the mid 90's, I was freelancing at a downtown Greensboro ad agency. Even though I was a little down on my luck at the time, I would treat myself to lunch at Undercurrent. Sitting at the bar, eating duck confit salad, it made me feel very Carrie Bradshaw, before there ever was a Carrie Bradshaw

Recently, work and good fortune brought me back. When I come back to Greensboro, I often times end up at Undercurrent. It's familiar, Claude and his oh-so-French sense of humor have been a staple since the beginning I think. (I will never forget the time my brother ordered a Diet Coke and Claude asked him how the vintage was!).

On this trip, salads were served up, as were entrees like duck breast, ribeye, and lamb chops. My mother exclaimed that the lamb chops were the most tender she had ever had and among the best tasting she had eaten. My duck as well seasoned and the right temperature for me. I would have loved the mashed potatoes to be creamier with more butter and half-and-half, but I realize everyone has a mashed potato preference. My dad likes his lumpy. Other people go for whipped. I will chock it up to a difference in spud style between the chef and me. As for the "meat",  I have no idea how the ribeye was... my father wouldn't stop eating to tell us. He must have liked his meal. His plate was super clean.

For the dessert, Undercurrent didn't have a lot of gluten-free options. The kitchen was offering a banana betty, similar to an apple betty we think. I asked if there were any extras back there and lucky me! there were. Out came my beloved bananas foster over some amazing rum raisin ice cream. This was a new twist on an old favorite and I loved it! I hope they offer it regularly now.

Undercurrent has since moved to the other end of Elm Street and expanded from when I used to feel "uptown" by having lunch at the bar, and I moved on from Greensboro. Things always change. I still go back to visit Claude and the folks at Undercurrent as often as I can. This is something that doesn't. They remember my family like we are long lost friends... and it's one of my favorite things about "home".  What's yours?
