Flying Saucer - Nashville, TN

Nashville is an entertainment town.... everyone knows it's Music City. Our plans were to steer clear of the honkey tonks for a romantic weekend. I have a passion for old hotel bars, so we thought we would head to the Union Station Hotel for pre-dinner drinks. Well, the bar was closed. Why? you may ask. Well.... Gwyneth Paltrow is shooting her new movie in town and apparently the hotel is one of the locations. Bummer.
Our misfortune turned out to be a good thing though. At the other end of the old train station, that there was another restaurant. It was too cold to walk much further, so we thought we would give it a go. As luck would have it, or irony, we found the Flying Saucer.
The Flying Saucer reminds me of a German beer hall, except it is utterly American and contemporary in a homey way. This is a place to share a pint with friends, coworkers, or anyone you want to get comfortable with. It is a 21 and up place, and smoking is allowed - this could be a surprise for those who live in non-smoking states!
We settled into the bar and I ordered a Strongbow Cider. This is a cider that has some bite and isn't too sweet (earlier Joe called me Zima girl. I was insulted. Strongbow is soooo not Zima. I just want to set the record straight. ok?). Joe did a German beer flight. It came out so cute! Five little highball glasses filled with different types of beer from Germany. They also have gluten-free beer for those of you that have celiac disease. Since we were killing time before dinner, we didn't eat, but the cheese tray of the man next to me looked GOOD. Expect refined bar food like Brie or goat cheese pizza along with some German brat at the Flying Saucer.
We had a really good time at the Flying Saucer. The brewcrew of brewtenders and brew goddesses made us totally relaxed and at home. Settle in on a cold night with your best mates, a cigar if that's your gig, and a pint of one of their gazillion draft choices. You'll have a good time.
